Cosmetic Dental Care for Beautiful Smiles

Bridges

A dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a Pontic, to fill in a missing tooth. A bridge is held in place by two crowns that are attached to your teeth on each side of the spot where the tooth is missing.

A “fixed” bridge can replace one or more missing teeth and cannot be taken out of your mouth, as you might do with removable partial dentures. The bridge is custom-made to fill in the space with a false tooth.

How is this done? Dr. Babik will prepare your teeth on either side of the space. You will be given a mild anesthetic to numb the area. Dr. Babik will make an impression, which will serve as the model from with the bridge, false tooth and crowns will be made by a dental laboratory. While the permanent bridge is being made, you will have a temporary bridge to wear. The temporary bridge will protect your teeth and gums.

Porcelain Veneer — Richmond, VA — Dr. Babik & Associates

Are There Different Types of Veneers?

There are two types of veneers:

Composite Veneers: Composite, or direct veneers, are usually performed in a single visit to Dr. Babik. He applies a bond and enamel directly to the tooth’s surface.

Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain, or indirect veneers, are a very thin porcelain material. Unlike our in-house one day crowns, usually porcelain veneers require two visits. A dental laboratory creates the final tooth restoration piece.

As we age, many of us find ourselves with teeth that are no longer structurally sound. Root canals, lost fillings, decay below a filling, large amalgam (silver) fillings, chipping and cracking of the enamel are all things that can lead to large-scale defects in a tooth’s surface. Grinding your teeth, an improper bite and age can all be contributing factors in the wearing down, cracking or breakage of your teeth. Dental crowns and/or cover the visible surface of your affected tooth and add strength, durability and tooth stability.

Veneers

Advantages of Veneers:

Porcelain veneers are common in creating smile makeovers. With porcelain veneers, you can have the smile of your dreams in a very short period of time. They brighten dark teeth, and they are strong and durable. There is no additional maintenance other than your regular flossing and brushing, and regular check-ups.

Disadvantages of Veneers:

Getting used to veneers is an adjustment, It can take a week or two to become accustomed to teeth that look and feel different.

Some people have minor sensitivity while wearing the temporary veneers. Also, It is not uncommon to experience a slight difference in speech, usually pronouncing the “s” and “f” sounds. Dr. Babik will work with you to correct this through making minor adjustments to the veneers.

Lastly, If you suffer from Bruxism (clinching or grinding your teeth), veneers can be damaged, however Dr. Babik can protect your veneers by making a custom fitting comfortable mouth guard to wear at night.
